After
the MCU special on Disney+ debuted, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special
director James Gunn addressed a persistent query on what will happen to Benicio
Del Toro's The Collector following Avengers: Infinity War.
As Taneleer
Tivan, The Collector played a significant role in the first Guardians of the
Galaxy film by acting as the purchaser of the Orb (also known as the Power
Stone), which the team was initially attempting to recover. In actuality, the
persona was in charge of educating the Guardians and the audience about the
Infinity Stones' past.
In Avengers: Infinity War, when Thanos ambushed
Knowhere to take the Reality Stone, the Collector made a comeback. The Avengers
3 prequel left open the question of whether or not the Mad Titan actually
killed Tivan.
Gunn has now clarified
the situation.
. James Gunn Reaffirms the Ending of The Collector
James
Gunn, the director of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, discussed
the effect of the film on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in an interview with
Entertainment Tonight.
When describing how the Holiday Special contains
"a lot of mythology" that will be significant in Vol. 3, By claiming
that the Guardians "bought Knowhere" from him to use as their base,
Gunn subtly revealed that the Collector is still alive after Infinity War:
"I also believe it was somewhat necessary
because, you know, I'm actually incorporating a lot of mythology that will be
significant in Vol. 3," the author continued. The fact that we have Cosmo
the dog and that they had this incredible spaceship called the Bowie, which is
four storeys tall in real life, as well as the fact that they have now acquired
Knowhere from The Collector and made it their headquarters of operations, are
all significant to Vol. 3.
Gunn also referenced
Cosmo the dog joining the crew and the Guardians' new ship, the Bowie, which
may or may not be a nod to rock legend David Bowie.
In Phase 4 of the MCU, where is the Collector?
By the
time of the holiday special, it appears that the Guardians of the Galaxy and
the Collector have reconciled.
Although
the Collector's decision to sell Knowhere to the group is unknown, it's
possible that it's his way of showing thanks for the Guardians' role in
stopping Thanos from destroying the universe.
He might
also have decided to retire using the funds raised by Peter Quill and his
allies because he no longer values collecting.
The
Collector's retirement is not altogether unexpected given how drastically the
cosmos was altered by Thanos' snap. Taneeler Tivan wouldn't be the first person
to think about altering their course, as Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula,
previously stated that she is "interested to maybe try and take [Nebula]
to a place now where she's starting to rebuild her life" now that Thanos
is defeated.
If
you're wondering where Tivan is, he might have gathered with the other Elders
of the Universe to await the next step or global threat.
